I provide psychotherapy as well as evaluations of personality, attention, learning, and memory. I work with adults, teenagers, and school-age children. I work with various issues, including relationship problems, school/work problems, and life transitions that affect many people. People may be experiencing anxiety, panic disorder, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, ADD/ADHD, learning problems, or questions related to personal identity. Most people I work with feel they are underachieving, and want to function closer to their full potential, in their work and/or in their personal life. My approach to psychotherapy is tailored to the individual. I use empirically supported psychological techniques from cognitive therapy and behavior therapy, but use the techniques depending on the individual. With couples, there is often a need to decrease negativity in their relationship, increase the positive, and improve communication and understanding. I have done post-doctoral work with adults at the Veterans Hospital in Richmond, VA and Dominion Hospital in Falls Church, VA through a clinical psychology program at George Washington University. With children and teenagers, I work with school, behavior, and learning problems. With younger children, I typically recommend behavior management techniques to their parents and work with kids through play activities. With adolescents and teenagers, I talk with them alone, and if necessary, try to get them to work with their parents to negotiate their differences. I have done post-doctoral work with children and teenagers at Kennedy Krieger Institute at Johns Hopkins Medical School, Child Development Center at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA, Dominion Hospital, and Woodburn Community Mental Health Center/Fairfax Juvenile Offender Program. If psychological testing is needed, I do learning, attention, memory, and educational evaluations as well as personality assessments. I use interview, observations, standardized tests, behavior rating scales, and projective assessment techniques. Some people present only for testing and evaluation, and our work may end with the evaluation report. Sometimes I find it useful to test people who are working with me in psychotherapy. Regardless of the reason for testing, I always try to explain the results of my evaluations in clear language and provide helpful recommendations. |
